Pearls are not the most durable of gems. This doesn't mean they're fragile, but it does mean they can't take the abuse, as a hard, durable gemstone like diamond can. Moreover they are very vulnerable to chemical products. But don't worry if you take a little care it will last forever without losing lustre and beauty.
Chemicals and cosmetic products will harm pearls if they come near them. Put on your pearl jewellery after you have finished applying makeup, hairspray and perfume.
Acids and heat are also harmful to pearls. Take the pearls off while showering, swimming and
cooking.
Perspiration can destroy the lustre. After wearing a pearl, wipe away any perspiration or dust with a soft cloth moistened with water. Then let it dry before keeping in the safe place. Never clean pearls with detergents.
If the pearl become dehydrated, they can get brittle and crack. They should not be kept near heaters or in places that get strong sunlight. Safe deposit boxes can be usually dry, so try to take them out occasionally or put a glass of water to get moisture.
